The Story About Ovaltine and Milo

posted by tristan @ 10/26/2004 10:06:00 PM

Hey all, how are you guys doing? Back blogging. Well, my throat is better now but not my cough. Hmm, there's so many tibits filled up in the cabinet waiting for me plus the Chocolate and Caramel Ice-cream waiting in the freezer. I can hear it shouting for my name "tristan, EAT ME UP" Awww man, i can't resist the temptation.

Anyway, went out for lunch with my colleagues and then proceeded to Cold Storage to stock up our office. You know, this is my 2nd time tagging along and I really love it. Coz' imagine the whole trolley is filled up with goodies, goodies and more goodies. As i was strolling along the drinks section, I was told a story about Ovaltine and Milo...... Once upon a time.......

  • Introduction
Let me ask you guys a question, who do you think existed in the market first? Ovaltine or Milo?
If your answer is Milo, I'm sorry. You're wrong. Ovaltine (also known as Ah-Hua-Tian) existed way before I came into this world. It was like my Mum and Dad generation kind of drink. Back then, Ovaltine was a relatively popular drink. Or should I say, its like a breakfast drink that everyone can't do without.

Being the sole player, Ovaltine monopolise the market. Popularity and demand rises and they see the word "SUCCESS". Their staff became arrogant and thinks too highly of themselves. The founder of Ovaltine decided to teach them a lesson.

  • What did the Founder do?
The founder went to Nestle, selling its secret formula to them. What was his intention in making this move? He just hope to scare the hell out of Ovaltine staff and wake them up with new competitors in the market.

  • What did Milo do to acheive its success?
With the secret formula in hand, Nestle decided to make good use of it. Intensive marketing campaigns set in, being a major sponsor in sports event, soon, everyone starts to know who MILO is. (Remember those days in Primary or Secondary school sports day? Who do you see outside the stadium? Its the Milo truck. Right?) And soon, Milo captures the taste bud of many people, Ovaltine? I bet they only stand 2% in the market now.

  • Lesson to be learn

Mind your own business. Not everyone is kind enough to play with you in the market.

And Milo live happily ever after.

Ok, that's all for today. Update soon.
Out~
